This committee was founded on 1986 as The Special committee for Investigation of the Beatification of Japanese Martyrs with the purpose of promoting the beatification of Peter Kibe and 187 martyrs. The ordinary plenary meeting of CBCJ held on June 2014 promoted this committee from special committee to an ordinary one, changing the name of the committee to The Committee for Promoting Canonisation.
The main role of the committee is:
・To support canonisation promoted by CBCJ
・To assist dioceses in promoting causes for canonisation
・To promote devotion to the Japanese Martyrs
