History

The Apostolic Prefecture of Kagoshima was established on March 18, 1927 when the two prefectures of Kagoshima and Okinawa were separated from the Nagasaki Diocese and entrusted to Canadian Franciscans. The first Apostolic Administrator was Msgr. Egide Roy, O.F.M.. Upon his resignation in 1936, Fr. Aijiro Yamaguchi was appointed as his successor, and from the following year he was concomitantly Bishop of Nagasaki. In 1940 Fr. Ichitaro Ideguchi was appointed Apostolic Prefect. After the end of World War II, Okinawa and the Southwest Islands (Amamioshima Region) came under American military occupation and came directly under the Holy See in 1947. On December 25, 1953, the Southwest Islands were returned to Japan.
On February 25, 1955, the Apostolic Prefecture of Kagoshima was elevated to the status of a diocese, and Msgr. Asajiro Satowaki was appointed the first Bishop of Kagoshima. He was consecrated on May 3, 1955. On May 8 of the same year, the Southwest Islands were officially reunited to Kagoshima Diocese. On December 19, 1968, Bishop Satowaki was appointed Archbishop of Nagasaki and installed on March 16 of the following year. On November 15, 1969, Fr. Shin’ichi Itonaga was appointed his successor in Kagoshima. He was consecrated Bishop on January 18, 1970 and took office as Bishop of Kagoshima.
Fr. Kenjiro Koriyama was appointed the successor of Bishop Itonaga on December 3, 2005. He was consecrated bishop on January 29, 2006.
On July 7, 2018, the Holy See announced that the pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Koriyama, and appointed Father Hiroaki Nakano as his successor. He was consecrated bishop on October 8, 2018.
