FEDERATION OF ASIAN BISHOPS CONFERENCE FOURTH PLENARY ASSEMBLY
(Excerpt of the homily delivered by Archbishop Seiichi Shirayanagi,President ofthe Bishops’Conference of Japan at the Eucharist celebrated onSept. 21,1986 at the Cathedral.)
On the occasion of the Fourth Assembly of the FABC, we, Catholic Bishops of Japan, as Japanese and as members of the Catholic Church sincerely ask forgiveness from God and from our brothers and sisters of Asia and the Pacificfor the tragedy brought by Japan during World War Ⅱ.
As parties involved in the war we share in the responsibility formore than 20 million victims in Asia and the Pacific. Furthermore we deeplyregret to have damaged the lives and cultures of the people of these regions. The trauma of it is not healed yet.
During this Eucharistic celebration we whole-heartedly pray forthe victims of the war and we express our determination to keep Japan fromcommitting the same crime again ; as Church of Japan we hereby renew ourcommitment to work towards the realization of human liberation and genuine peacein Asia and the Pacific.
Heavenly Father , you are the source of peace , bless abundantlyour Asia with its many difficult problems. Look with favor on our brothers andsisters here assembled and send your Spirit to us, bishops, priests, religiousand laity of Japan to make us your instruments so that the people in Asia canlive a truly human life in peace. We ask you this through Christ, your son andour Lord. Amen.

第４回アジア司教協議会連盟総会が日本で開催されたこの機会に、私たち日本の司教は、日本人としても、日本の教会の一員としても、日本が第２次世界大戦中にもたらし た悲劇について、神とアジア・太平洋地域の兄弟たちに赦しを願うものであります。
私たちは、この戦争に関わったものとして、アジア・太平洋地域の2 千万を越える人 々の死に責任を持っています。さらに、この地域の人々の生活や文化などの上に今も痛 々しい傷を残していることについて深く反省します。
私たちは、このミサにおいて、アジア・太平洋地域におけるすべての戦争犠牲者の方 々の平安を心から祈り、日本が、再び同じ過ちを犯さないだけでなく、アジアにおける 真の人間解放と平和に貢献するよう、教会としての責任を果たす決意を新たにします。
平和の源である天の父よ、幾多の困難を抱える私たちのアジアにあなたの祝福と恵み を注いでください。今日ここに、アジア・太平洋地域から集まったこの共同体を顧み、 アジアにおいて人間が真に人間らしい生活を平和のうちにおくることができるために、 私たち日本の司教が、司祭、修道者、信徒とともに、あなたの道具として働くことがで きるように聖霊をお遣わしください。
あなたのおん子、主イエズス・キリストのみ名によって。アーメン。
