教皇来日２０周年記念・平和祈願ミサに寄せて

日本の司教たちは８月５日、教皇来日２０周年を記念し、世界の平和を願って祈るため、広島カテドラル幟町教会（世界平和記念聖堂）に集まってミサをささげた。 　教皇ヨハネ・パウロ二世は、教皇庁国務長官アンジュロ・ソダーノ枢機卿をとおして、このミサのためにメッセージを寄せた。 　以下は、その全文である。

　教皇は、２００１年８月５日、ご自身の日本歴訪２０周年記念の平和ミサをささげるために広島に集われた司教の皆さんと信者の皆さんに、心からのあいさつを送ります。
　このミサは、１９４５年８月６日に投下された原子爆弾によって、広島が悲惨な破壊を受けてから５６周年を前にして行われるものです。
　広島と長崎は、人類全体の記憶に刻み込まれています。その記憶は、人間が発揮してしまう破壊的な力と、戦争の恐ろしさと苦しみを思い起こさせるものです。
　この２つの都市の悲劇的な過去を思い起こすことは、新たな決意とともに、険しく困難な平和への道を旅することでもあります。それには、たとえいつもその脅威にさらされても、戦争が避けられないものではないという確信が伴わねばなりません。
　教皇は、激烈な戦争の犠牲となった人々を思い起こしつつ、この平和ミサに参列しているすべての人を、平和のため、軍備縮小のため、そして、すべての核兵器の禁止のために、たゆまぬ努力を続けるよう招いておられます。
　平和の女王であるマリアの母としてのご保護にあなたがたをゆだねつつ、教皇は、心からの使徒的祝福を送ります。

The Holy Father sends warm greetings to the Bishops and faithful
gathered on August 5, 2001 in Hiroshiua to celebrate a Mass for
peace on the Twentieth Anniversary of his visit to Japan. This celebration
takes place on the eve of the fifty-sixth anniversary of the terrible
destruction of Hiroshima by the atomic bomb which fell on the city
on August 6, 1945. Hiroshima and Nagasaki will for ever be etched
in the collective memory of the human race as a salutary reminder
of the destructive power of which man is capable and of the horror
and suffering of war. To recall the tragic past of these two cities
is to commit oneself with fresh determination to travel the steep
and arduous path of peace in the conviction that war, while always
a threat, is not inevitable. As His Holiness recalls the victims
of war’s destructive fury, he invites all present at the anniversary
Mass to continue to work untiringly for peace, for disarmament and
for the banishing of all unclear weapons. Entrusting them to the
maternal protection of Mary, Queen of Peace, the Holy Father cordially
imparts his Apostolic Blessing.
